Aquamarine

Aquamarine is the beautiful gemstone that is the color of the sea, bluish – green. It has been known to man for thousands of years. Ancient sailors would take these precious stones on ships when they traveled to stay safe, in medieval ages, it was believed to have mystical qualities such as for one to be happy in marriage and to be honest and faithful. Aquamarine is made from Beryl, one of the most readily available minerals in the world, however it does include Beryllium which is a rare element.

Beryl comes in many colors, for instance, in bluish green, it is Aquamarine, when yellow or yellow orange, it is called Heliodor. Beryl also comes in a pale pink called Morganite, there is even a white Beryl called Goshenite. Besides these colors, one of the most sought after color of Beryl is the rarest of them, a deep red Beryl called Bixbate.

Beryl is a mineral that grows hexagonal in nature and its crystal habits are either prismatic, elongated or flattened. The transparency and translucence of this mineral make the Beryl look very glassy adding to the overall beauty of the stone. The stone has a hardness of 7.5 or 8.0 which is considerably hard and perfect for ornamental jewelry uses. However, it should be noted that it can still fracture or break. Aquamarine has been found in large sizes weighing over 200 hundred pounds, however, most Aquamarine that is found is much smaller, usually a few carats.

Aquamarine is one of the more popular gemstones around. Aquamarine is found in many parts of the world including North America, South America, Russia, India, Madagascar and Africa. It is formed from Beryl, its scientific formula is Be3Al2 (Si6)18. While Beryl is one of the most common minerals around, Aquamarine does include Beryllium, a very rare element. However, its color is attributed to small amounts of iron within the mineral. It is usually found in geological cavities, mostly in granite pegmatite’s.

Aquamarine is usually a bluish –green color and its name is from Latin meaning “blue sea”. Aquamarine is Beryl with Beryllium and aluminum silicate. Beryl comes in many colors and is of course Aquamarine when bluish green, but when yellow or yellow orange it is called Heliodor. It even occurs in a pale pink called Morganite. Usually each mine will yield different kinds of Beryl. For instance, Brazil usually has large deposits of Heliodor, Sri Lanka is known for its Aquamarine. Aquamarine is even found in the Midwest of America, for instance Colorado. The official stone of Colorado is Aquamarine.

Aquamarine has many great attributes that make it an excellent stone for ornamental jewelry and it is usually fashioned for earrings, rings, bracelets and charms. For instance, its hardness is rated a 7.5 o 8.0 on the Moh’s scale. This means it is generally a decent stone to wear on a day to day basis due to its strength. It normally comes in hexagonal crystals and is transparent or translucent giving a glassy look to it.
